How to use a desktop remote

Windows 10.

Use Remote Desktop on your Windows, Android, or iOS device to connect to a Windows 10 PC from Afar.

Prepare the PC you want to connect to allow long distance connections:

Make sure you have a Windows 10 Pro. To check, go to Start> Settings> System> About and look for editions. For info on how to get it, go to improve Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro.

When you are ready, select Start> Settings> System> Remote Desktop, and turn on the desktop remote.

Record the name of this PC by connecting to this PC. You will need this later.

Use the remote desktop to connect to the PC you set:

On your local Windows 10 PC: in the search box on the taskbar, type a remote desktop connection, then select the remote desktop connection. In a remote desktop connection, type the name of the PC you want to connect (from step 1), then select Connect.

In Windows, Android, or your iOS device: Open Remote Desktop App (available for free from Microsoft Store, Google Play, and Mac App Store), and add the name of the PC you want to connect (from step 1). Select the name PC remotely you added, then wait for the connection to finish.

Use a desktop remote in Windows 7

This instruction for Windows XP users who want to enter Windows 7 computers.

Prepare your office computer for long-distance desktop sessions

Click Start, select Control Panel and then double-click the system.

When the window opens select Allow connection from a computer that runs the remote desktop version (less secure)

Verify that you have the right permission to connect to your computer by clicking the User select ...

Domain and your username must be registered as it already has access

Note: If you don't have access, click the Add button. As shown above and the window similar to the one below will appear. In the room below enter the object name to select (example):, type your domain (the domain for employees is Hamilton-D) and a user ID. For example Hamilton-d Dhubbard. Click Check Name and, if it is a valid username, the domain name will disappear and your username will be underlined. For example, in the illustration below, Hamilton-d Dhubbard will turn into Dhubbard. Click OK to close the User select window.

Click OK to close the desktop remote user window and click OK again to close the system properties window.

Next confirm your firewall is active and set to allow long-range desktops. Click Start, select Control Panel and then double-click on Windows Firewall.

Click Allow Programs or Features through Windows Firewall.

Click on the Change settings. Scroll to the remote desktop and select the box below the domain and home / work (private), as shown on the next page.

Click OK.

Click Start and then click Run ...

In the open field: type CMD and click OK.

 Type ipconfig on the cursor flashing and press the Enter key on your keyboard.

Record the IP address (as shown above), you will need this number when you access your computer from home. (Note: You have to do this every time you plan to use remote desktop access because the IP address changes periodically.) Close the window.

To access your computer using a remote desktop, your office computer must be active and enter the Hamilton network. To prevent someone from using your computer when you leave, we suggest you lock your desktop. To do this, press the button, and <delete> simultaneously and then click on the key computer.

It finishes preparing your computer. This setting will still apply and do not need to be repeated.

Connect to remote computers

Click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, select Communication and double-click on the remote desktop connection.

On a computer: field, type the IP address (from step 10 above) for your office computer.

Note: If you need to transfer files back and forth between your remote computer and your computer, you can click on the option. In the expanded window, click on the tab called the local resource, and at the bottom, put the check mark in the box next to the disk drive. When moving files from one computer to the next computer you will use copy and paste. "Save as" and other familiar techniques will not function.

Click Connect. If you make your disk drive available (see notes above) you will see security warnings about sharing disk drives. Click OK.

In the entry dialog box into Windows, type your username, password and domain as you do if you are in your office and then click OK. For employees, the domain is Hamilton-d.

The remote desktop window will open and you will see desktop settings, files, and programs on your office computer. Your office computer will remain locked and no one will be able to work on your office computer without a password, also won't see the work you do on your office computer. To improve performance, you will not see your ordinary desktop image if used. Instead it might be a solid color, usually black.

Print using remote desktop

At home your printer is a default printer. To select your office printer, click on the drop-down menu where your printer is registered and select your office printer from the list.

Click OK to print as usual.

To get out and end the session

In the remote desktop session, click Start and select Disconnect

You will be asked whether you are sure you want to disconnect. Click Disconnect the connection.
